Mekong Delta Day Trip from Ho Chi Minh City
The Mekong Delta is Vietnam's rice bowl — a vast network of rivers, canals, and islands south of Ho Chi Minh City where life moves at the pace of the water. A day trip from Saigon gives you a taste, but even a short visit is worth it.
Most day trips head to Ben Tre or My Tho, about two hours from the city. You'll board a small boat, cruise through narrow canals shaded by coconut palms, visit a coconut candy workshop, sample tropical fruit at a local orchard, and maybe catch a traditional music performance.
The floating markets are the highlight — if you go early enough. Cai Rang (near Can Tho) is the biggest, but it's a 3.5-hour drive from Saigon, so it works better as an overnight trip. For a day trip, Cai Be is more accessible and still gives you the floating market experience.
What most tours don't tell you: the Mekong Delta is best visited in the dry season (November through April). During rainy season, some canals flood and boat trips get shortened. Also, the floating markets start at dawn — if your tour departs Saigon at 8 AM, you'll arrive when the market is already winding down.
Skip the large group tours with 40 people on a bus. The smaller the group, the better the experience. You'll get into narrower canals, visit less-touristy villages, and actually hear the guide. We run small-group trips with a maximum of 8 travelers.
