Hoi An vs Hue: Which Should You Visit?
Hoi An and Hue are both on every Vietnam itinerary, and for good reason. But they're very different places, and if you're short on time, you might need to choose. Here's the honest comparison.
Hoi An is the charming one. A small riverside town with lantern-lit streets, tailor shops on every corner, and some of the best food in Vietnam. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it earns it — the architecture is a mix of Chinese, Japanese, and French colonial styles that somehow works perfectly together.
Hue is the historic one. The former imperial capital of Vietnam, with a sprawling citadel, royal tombs, and pagodas along the Perfume River. It's quieter than Hoi An, more contemplative. If you're interested in Vietnamese history and culture, Hue delivers in a way few other cities can.
For food, it's a tie — but different styles. Hoi An is famous for cao lau (thick noodles with pork and greens), white rose dumplings, and banh mi. Hue is known for bun bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup), banh beo (steamed rice cakes), and a royal cuisine tradition that dates back centuries.
Our recommendation: visit both. They're only three hours apart by car (the Hai Van Pass drive is spectacular), and two nights in each gives you enough time. But if you must choose: Hoi An for first-time visitors who want atmosphere and relaxation, Hue for history buffs and repeat visitors looking for something deeper.
