Sapa Trekking: Routes, Seasons & What to Pack
Sapa sits at 1,500 meters in Vietnam's northwest highlands, and the trekking here is unlike anything else in Southeast Asia. Terraced rice paddies cascade down mountain slopes, Hmong and Dao villages dot the valleys, and on clear days you can see Fansipan — Indochina's highest peak — from the trail.
The classic trek is the Sapa to Cat Cat Village loop. It's a half-day walk through rice terraces with a waterfall at the bottom. Easy enough for most fitness levels, and the views are stunning. For something more challenging, the Muong Hoa Valley trek takes you through Ta Van and Lao Chai villages over two days with a homestay.
September and October are the best months for trekking. The rice terraces are golden and ready for harvest, the weather is cool and mostly dry, and the trails are in good condition. March through May is the planting season — the terraces are flooded and green, which is beautiful but muddier underfoot.
Avoid December through February unless you enjoy trekking in fog. Temperatures can drop below freezing at night, and the mountain roads get icy. June through August is rainy season — trails become slippery and leeches come out in force.
Hire a local guide. Not just because the trails are confusing (they are), but because the Hmong and Dao women who lead most treks know these mountains intimately. They'll take you to viewpoints tourists miss, introduce you to families in the villages, and explain the rice cultivation cycle that shapes life here.
Pack waterproof hiking boots (trails are muddy even in dry season), a rain jacket, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle. Bring cash — there are no ATMs in the villages. And leave the heavy backpack at your hotel; a day pack with water and snacks is all you need.
