Ninh Binh: Vietnam's Underrated Hidden Gem
Ninh Binh is only two hours south of Hanoi, but it feels like a different world. Imagine Ha Long Bay's limestone karsts, but rising from rice paddies instead of water. Add ancient temples, quiet rivers perfect for rowboat rides, and almost no crowds — that's Ninh Binh.
Tam Coc is the star attraction: a boat ride through three caves along the Ngo Dong River, surrounded by rice paddies and karst mountains. It's stunning, especially in May through June when the rice is golden. Trang An is similar but longer, with more caves and the added bonus of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Don't skip Bai Dinh Pagoda, the largest Buddhist temple complex in Southeast Asia. The scale is extraordinary — 500 stone arhat statues line the path to the main temple, and the views from the hilltop are worth the climb.
Mua Cave is the Instagram spot: 500 steps to the top of a karst peak with a panoramic view of the Tam Coc valley below. Go at sunrise to beat the heat and the crowds. It's a steep climb but manageable for most fitness levels.
Most travelers visit Ninh Binh as a day trip from Hanoi, but we recommend staying overnight. The countryside is beautiful at dusk, the homestays are charming, and you'll have Tam Coc almost to yourself in the early morning.
