First Time in Ha Long Bay: What to Expect
Ha Long Bay is one of those places that actually lives up to the photos. Nearly 2,000 limestone karsts rising from emerald water, fishing villages tucked into quiet coves, and sunsets that stop you mid-sentence.
But here's what the brochures don't tell you: not all cruises are created equal. Some boats are floating hotels with kayaking and cooking classes. Others are overcrowded ferries with a buffet lunch. The difference between a magical trip and a disappointing one usually comes down to which vessel you choose.
We've sailed dozens of routes across Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay, and Bai Tu Long Bay. In this guide, we'll walk you through what to expect on your first visit — the honest version, not the sales pitch.
The best time to visit is October through December. The skies are clear, the humidity drops, and the water is calm enough for kayaking. January and February can be foggy — beautiful in its own way, but not ideal for photography. Avoid July and August if you can; it's peak typhoon season and some cruises cancel on short notice.
Pack layers. Mornings on the water are cooler than you'd expect, even in summer. Sunscreen is essential, and bring a waterproof bag for kayaking excursions. Most cruises provide towels and basic toiletries, but bring your own sunscreen — the onboard shop charges triple.
A two-day, one-night cruise is enough for most travelers. You'll see the main karsts, visit a cave, kayak through a lagoon, and catch the sunset from the sundeck. Three-day cruises add Lan Ha Bay or a floating village visit — worth it if you have the time, but not essential for a first trip.
One more thing: book directly or through a trusted agency, not through a random tout on the street in Hanoi. Scams are rare these days, but quality varies wildly. That's exactly why we started GetGo — to help travelers skip the guesswork.
